Mussoorie
A mountain-resort town, Mussoorie is on the south-facing slopes of the 7000 feet high Himalayan foothills. It was initially developed during the Raj period by the Englishmen as an escape from the torturous heat of the Indian plains. Now it is one of India’s and Uttarkhand’s most popular hill stations. You can still see the remains of the British Raj in the colonial bungalows and some of the heritage hotels and resorts.
Mussoorie, often referred to as the “Queen of the Hills” is located at a distance of mere 45 kms from Dehradun, the capital of the hill state of Uttarakhand. Further, a driving distance of just 6 hours from New Delhi, the capital of India means that it is a popular and bustling hill-station, especially during the summer months when Delhi itself is burning with the mercury soaring to well over 40 degrees. On the contrary, the weather in Mussoorie is beautiful with temperatures hovering about the 15-20 degree mark. In the winters, Mussoorie looks pretty in the snow.
Places to see and visit while you are in Mussoorie: Kempty Falls – With waters rushing down a height of over 4000 feet, the Kempty Falls located 13 kms off Mussoorie is much popular with tourists. Then there is a pretty walk known as the “Camel Back”. Also check out Gun Hill which offers stunning views of the higher Himalayas on one side and the Doon Valley on the other, St. Mary’s Church – the oldest of the churches in the region, Sir George Everest House, the Mussoorie Lake and much more. And of course, you cannot be in Mussoorie and not visit the mall – the lifeline of the city, buzzing with tourists but offering great food and shopping.
